Learn : Marathon Story

Running Background:

I consider myself an intermediate runner and I primarily run for hobby. I ran this marathon in honor of my Dad who died of cancer. I joined Team in Training for support and to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This was my sole purpose for running the marathon in the beginning...now I run as a hobby. I love it!

Training:

I trained for 5 months following the Team in Training program. During my training I averaged 25 miles per week.

The best advice I received was to remember the reason we were training. I was training in honor of my Father and this motivated me daily. I was also told, "Once you finish running 26.2 miles, no one can ever take that away from you." That was great motivating advice.

Race Day:

The 2007 PF Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon wasn't quite what I expected due to the horrible weather we had that day. I had trained to run a faster time so I was a little disappointed in myself, but as far as the race itself, it was great! I finished and I was proud to say I completed something I had worked so hard to achieve.

The first 16 miles were a blast. I waved at everyone, gave hi-fives to children and rocked out to the bands. By mile 17 I had to focus to finish. Overall, it was an awesome experience that changed my life. I am proud to say I am now a "runner" and I hope I continue to run my entire life. When I'm 80 years old I may have to walk, but look for me -- I'll be there! ;)

Recovery:

I didn't have any problems with my recovery. I was sore, but I think I could have prevented some of this if I would have kept moving after the race. I didn't have any long-term problems after the race.

Running Gear Recommendations:

Asics Gel Nimbus VII's
I love my shoes! They were long lasting, great support and I also like the way they look. :)

Tips/Words of Encouragement:

It's just one step at a time. Don't think miles ahead, it will hurt you mentally. Train hard and have fun. You'll finish and enjoy doing it at the same time. I began training for a purpose, but now I train as a hobby. Running will be a great way to get in shape and stay in shape. The longer the runs the stronger you will feel. It will give you confidence in yourself not only physically, but in every other aspect of your life.

Plans to Run Another:

I'm planning to run another marathon because it's my hobby now. I'm hooked! :) I worked so hard to be able to run the distance. I don't want to lose that.

For my next marathon, I'm going to run faster!! :)
