Learn : Marathon Story

Running Background:

I consider myself an advanced runner and I primarily run for fitness. I decided to run a marathon because I wanted to complete another one in the state of Texas.

Training:

I didn't follow a specific training program. I averaged about 30 miles per week during the one month of training I did do.

For people thinking about running a marathon, the best advice I would share is to never try anything new on race day.

Race Day:

The 2007 Texas Marathon was about what I expected. There was great support and lots of other 50-staters. The crowd was very friendly and the race route had several out-back sections where we could cheer on fellow marathoners. Overall the good weather and flat course made for an enjoyable day. My only complaint was that the race route had too much cement -- OUCH!

Recovery:

My recovery wasn't bad. I followed the race with stretching, Aleve (ibuprofen), and a massage which always helps.

Keep moving; even a slow pace will eventually get you to the finish line.

Plans to Run Another:

I'm planning to continue to run marathons. My goal is to finish the 50-states for my 4th time around.

For my next marathon, I'm going to train more often.
