Learn : Marathon Story

Running Background:

I consider myself a beginner runner and I primarily run for stress relief. I decided to run a marathon because I wanted to set a new goal for myself and accomplish it.

Training:

I trained with Team in Training which was an amazing experience. The best thing about the Team in Training program was that it helped keep me motivated! I knew that our group was meeting early Saturday mornings for our long runs and there were people counting on me being there. Knowing that there were going to be other people going through the same thing with me definitely helped.

My training lasted 5 months and I averaged 20 miles per week. The best advice I received during my training was to make sure I stretched and to not be afraid to WALK.

I'm definitely glad that I trained with the group for my first marathon, they were helpful and very experienced. Even through the race, there were coaches all over making sure that I was doing okay. I'm very glad that I did it and very thankful to all my coaches who made it happen.

Race Day:

The 2006 Chicago Marathon wasn't quite what I expected. The only part that was bad was that it was way too cold that day and I wasn't prepared for it. Towards the end of the race, I got stiff really, really fast and couldn't move.

Recovery:

I didn't have any problems with my recovery. I rested after the race, took a nice hot shower, and relaxed.

Do it! You will be amazed at how your body will adapt and the results will surprise you.

Plans to Run Another:

I'm planning to run another marathon because I want to keep doing it. For my next marathon, I'm going to try to run the whole thing.
