Learn : Half Marathon Story

Running Background:

I consider myself an intermediate runner and I primarily run for hobby. I decided to run a half marathon because it's longer than a 10K, but not as difficult as a marathon.

Training:

I trained for 2.5 months following an adapted marathon training program that I had followed several years prior. During my training I ran four times a week with weight lifting on the non-run days. I tried to make sure that the training was 60% of the mileage during the week with a long run on Saturday. The longest run prior to the race was 11 miles and I averaged 20 miles per week throughout my training.

Race Day:

The 2006 Sioux Falls Half Marathon was a good race. It was nicely organized with only 600 runners, so it wasn't too crowded. My goal was to run it in less than two hours and I did that by finishing in 1:45:36.

Recovery:

My recovery wasn't bad. I had some lingering soreness and tightness for a little more than a week.

Running Gear Recommendations:

Tips/Words of Encouragement:

To someone thinking about running a half marathon I would say just do it! I know that it's a cliche, but it's true.

Plans to Run Another:

I'm planning to run another half marathon because it was fun!
