Learn : Half Marathon Story  

Running Background:

marathon photoI consider myself an intermediate runner and I primarily run for fitness. I decided to run a half marathon because I wanted to do it with my dad.

Training:

I followed Hal Higdon's for my first half marathon. I just kept up the mileage for the time between races. I averaged 25 miles per week.

Best advice: taper the last week! It's hard, you feel lazy, but do it! Uou'll come in with a much better time.

Race Day:

The 2008 Niagara Falls Half Marathon was better than expected. I decided to run this half for fun to finish off the season and not have a good time! Loved the course, very beautiful, scenic, completely flat even with a little 55-foot drop in the end :D.

There were aid stations every mile!! Each aid station had a cheering group from a local school who were very loud -- cheerleaders, marching band, mascots, you name it. As soon as the cheers died out from the previous aid stations you hear the cheers from the next one.

Very nicely organized! Feeling of care and effort you get from small races but on a bigger scale. Highly Recommended! The medals were awesome too :) and if you decide to run the full you actually cross the border.

Recovery:

No recovery problems. I iced my hamstring for a bit, but because I was recovering from a partial tear.

Tips/Words of Encouragement:

Running requires patience. Don't try to be fast in the beginning of a half, go at a pace you might think is too slow, but break away and run the last 5-7k like it's a separate race, you'll have the energy, enthusiasm and a hardcore race photo.

Plans to Run Another:

I'm planning to run another half marathon.

This race was the first one where I followed a bunny... I will do that again for sure. Wise choice.
