Learn : Half Marathon Story

Running Background:

marathon photoI consider myself a beginner runner and I primarily run for fitness. I decided to run a half marathon because a full marathon sounds almost impossible, but a half--while still offering real challenges--can be accomplished with a training schedule that doesn't take over your life..

Training:

I trained using the Runner's World Interactive Trainer. I trained for 4 months and averaged 25 miles per week.

For others thinking about running a half marathon, I wish I would have followed the tempo and speed advice.

Race Day:

The 2008 Philadelphia Distance Run was better than expected. This year's race took place on an absolutely beautiful day. The course takes you briefly through downtown before moving to Kelly Drive along the river. It's a scenic run that manages to be peaceful, as well--lots of open space and room to go at your pace. I really enjoyed this race, and will definitely sign up for next year.

Recovery:

My recovery was not bad. Should have stretched more!

Tips/Words of Encouragement:

I have 3 small children, and while carving the time out to train was difficult, I came to rely on my runs for the peace and quiet that solitary running offers. I am no athlete. If I can do it, so can you!

Plans to Run Another:

I'm planning to run another half marathon!
