Learn : Half Marathon Story  

Running Background:

marathon photoI consider myself a beginner runner and I primarily run for fitness.

Training:

I didn't follow a specific training program in preparing for this race. I did train for 3 months, and I averaged about 25 miles per week.

Race Day:

The 2007 Bizz Johnson Half Marathon was worse than expected.

It is a lovely course, but the Race Director's extreme rudeness and unprofessional behavior towards racers ruined our trip. When asked basic questions, his inadequate answers were given in a condescending manner. There was no expo, no race packets, no pre-race information, confusion with drop bags, late race start with poor communication, and no lanterns in the dark train tunnels as promised.

The pasta night was fine except for when the RD tactlessly whined about his race expenses ($10,000 for porta potties and $50,000 to hire a speaker). Clearly, the RD has no respect for people who spend their hard-earned money to travel to his event. His right-hand man was equally as rude. We weren't the only ones to feel this way -- other runners also complained.

We will not go back to this event.

Recovery:

I didn't have any problems with my recovery. Soaking my legs in an icy bath helped the recovery process tremendously.

Tips/Words of Encouragement:

Try to find a friend to train with as the miles go by much faster and the time together is very rewarding. They can help you stay on track when your motivation is low. Look for new routes to break up the monotony and give yourself plenty of time to build the necessary mileage.

Plans to Run Another:

I'm planning to continue to run half marathons.
