Learn : Marathon Story

Running Background:

I consider myself an advanced runner and I primarily run for fitness. I began this race in 1995 to provide ultramarathon options to local runners. These are the only certified 50 mile and 50K runs in the state of Missouri as far as I know. All the state records have been set on the Blue Springs course.

Training:

I continue to enter 100 mile races, but in 2006 I was barely able to complete 50 miles due to pain in my right hip, and in 2007 I was able to make only 37 miles. My last decent run was in 2002 when I was age 70. I set a Kansas age group record of 3:38 in the marathon. I also broke a 14 year old age 70 record at the JFK 50 Mile.

Race Day:

The 2007 Blue Springs 50 Mile Ultramarathon was better than expected even though I wasn't able to finish. This is a small event on an easy and fast crushed stone course. It is very easy on the legs.

Recovery:

I didn't have any recovery problems.

Running Gear Recommendations:

Gaiters
It's a good idea to wear gaiters on this course -- any brand.

Tips/Words of Encouragement:

If you need to qualify for Boston or Western States? This is your place.

Plans to Run Another:

I'm planning to run ultramarathons as long as I can finish within the time allowance.
