Learn : Half Marathon Story |
|

Running Background:
I consider myself an intermediate runner and I primarily run for fitness. I decided to run a half marathon because I need a goal to keep me motivated. I find with a busy family and demanding job it is easy to put my needs aside. If I have a goal I am much more likely to get my runs in. Surprisingly, when I do take the time for myself to run, I am a much happier mom and that translates into happier kids/home.
Training:
I trained for 4 months and I averaged about 20 miles per week. I didn't follow a specific training plan. The best advice I received while preparing for the half marathon was to do some speed training -- it really helped improve my time.
Race Day:
The 2006 Deadwood Mickelson Trail Half Marathon was exactly what I expected. It was a beautiful run through the Black Hills on a fast downhill course. The entire race was well organized and the aid stations and crowd support were great!
Recovery:
My recovery wasn't bad. I took a long soak in a hot bath.
Running Gear Recommendations:
Tips/Words of Encouragement:
Sign up!! That is motivation enough. Everyone that enters is a winner. The only losers are the ones sitting at home!
Plans to Run Another:
I'm planning to continue to run half marathons because I love the motivation of preparing for a race. For my next half marathon, I'm going to try to do more speed training to improve my time!
